Cop on the Hill: Stories from the weeks of April 3, 10 17, 2026

Put me in Coach: Just past the Senate security procedure, a guy asked me what a Long Rider was? (on my belt buckle). After my brief explanation on how to earn the buckle, he asked of my mission in DC…I explained the COP point of view with a few sound bites. We kept talking…a total of 7-8 minutes.
He was a staffer to a Midwest Senator. A few years back he had been the coach of his universities’ Debate Club. He offered that my messages were effective and easy to understand and remember. In my 20 years on the Hill, it was my first professional feedback.
Examples of some buzz phrases I use with Members and Staff:
The government Can Not fix personal stupid.
Make drugs a medical issue, not criminal.
Personal responsibility Must be the cornerstone of drug policy; All Drugs
I can protect you and your family better from Bad People, if we stop wasting time on Drug People.
Regarding my push for effective treatment for heroin/fentanyl addiction:
”please ask the Senator to become Pro-Life for his/her constituents that are this tall” (putting my hand up to the level of the person I am talking to.
I incorporate all those points in my 15-minute presentations to staff.
Personal Note: After explaining to my doctor my serious symptoms earlier this spring, he recommended two weeks in France…just came back – all better.

* Consider being a member of COP at $40 or more per year. All contributions are tax-deductible. 40 dollars buys all the copy paper COP uses in one year. Law Enforcement’s voice in opposition to current policy is vital on the Hill to achieve a repeal of federal drug prohibition. COP provides that voice. www.citizensopposingprohibition.org ( to donate by Internet)
