COP on the Hill: Stories from the week of October 20, 2023

Weekly Activities:

534 to go:  Cman Mfume gave me a moment this week. After I gave him my mission statement, he responded that Kurt Schmoke had had the right idea 50 years ago (legalize heroin to solve a host of problems).  I responded, “I stand on the broad shoulders of Mayor Schmoke and represent at least 7,000 other cops who take the same position.”   How I love a person of courage and wisdom.  534 to go!

Grover meeting:  you note each week I attend the Norquist center-right meeting.  Besides sitting at the main table and being Grover’s ‘go to expert’ on all matters of Modern Prohibition, I have 2-5 minutes chats with folks running for Congress, running organizations and other experts. Moreover, I feel so good about those 2 hours of presenting my Libertarian/Police POV….Love  my job!! At this stage of my career, it has become vitally important that I enjoy my work And I Do.

Off Duty Marketing:  As you know, I wear my Ask Me Why shirt pretty much 24-7, when I am not in Congress..this week i went to Costco Pharmacy to request my medication.  The woman at the counter opened with, “Mr. Wooldridge your order for the heart meds is almost ready.  I will let you know.”   I was SPEECHLESS.  After I asked, she said, ‘ I have seen you for 15 years, noticing you switched from Legalize Pot to Legalize Heroin a few years ago.   You are hard to miss.’

She left me stuttering. Wow!

COP on the Hill: Stories from the week of October 13, 2023

Weekly Activities:

Happy to Help: A buddy of mine at the Grover meeting went out his way to introduce to me an Iraq War vet who has just started lobbying in Congress.  He wants the Defense Dept to award a Purple Heart to all those soldiers who were injured by Agent Orange in Vietnam and the burning oil pits, etc. in Iraq…he is having great difficulty arranging meetings with Congressional staffers.  I gave him some pointers and next week he will go with me on a few of my meetings to see how I do it; AKA I will mentor him…feels good

Florence Nightengale / Personal Time:  A short week, as my fiancé Jean had medium serious foot surgery, needed a driver and serious care the first 24 hours..  it was my first time to be a health care provider/nurse.  Not fun and was interesting.

COP on the Hill: Stories from the week of October 6, 2023

Weekly Activities:

No Sale:  I had a long, 35 M chat with the legislative director for a Michigan Republican this week.  Despite my sole request being to look into increased treatment access for fenti addicts, he launched into 1) marijuana had not been proven safe and more studies needed to be done. 2) perhaps a wall would stop the fenti coming from Mexico 3) more support/money for the police and other stuff, etc…It had been a long time since someone in Congress had used ideas from the last century  to use in a chat…

PS…in case you did not know, there is essentially zero.zero heroin being sold in USA.

Spiritual Help:  After lunch 2 gentlemen and their wives stopped by and thanked me for my service as an officer.  We got into a 10-minute chat  about how much the nation / Members of Congress needed God’s help to put us back on track.  Turns out they were the Christian and Jewish chaplains for the House.  Yes, a paid position.

This week:  solid again.

COP on the Hill: Stories from the week of Sept 29, 2023

Weekly Activities:

Validation:  Since the 2023 marijuana bills already have over-whelming House/Senate support, this year I have been focusing on treatment.  100s of meetings this year asking for a bill to expand treatment for victims of opioid addiction…my ship came in this week, as I learned about:

HR 1359 – S-644:  Modernizing Opioid Treatment Access Act

It contains my main message of allowing all doctors in USA to prescribe methadone after a short seminar  of how to dispense it safely to addicts.

Even the title made me smile.  I have told every staffer that the USA is still using the same approach used the past 100 years.  Even as 200 die daily from our current approach.

Wanted: Dead or Alive?:  A long-running professional friend (8 years now) told me during after a presentation that a certain Western, Republican hates me; there is a target (metaphorical) of me on his office wall with my foto on it.  Yikes!

I take this as a great accomplishment.

Old Times:   Going thru security, I saw the Capitol Police officer pull 3 sets of steel, police handcuffs out of this woman’s backpack.  Not something I had seen before.  An hour later in Rayburn, I was intending to go into an office.  The corridor was filled with about 40 people, 25 in wheelchairs, chanting loudly that Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX) should come out and talk to them.

I spoke to the Capitol officer for a few minutes (we have known each other for 10 years) and his buddy, a Capitol Police detective…Rest of the story…they eventually arrested 14 in wheelchairs, after they ignored multiple warnings to not block the hallway.

This week:  solid again.

COP on the Hill: Stories from the week of Sept 22, 2023

Weekly Activities:

Finally; A robust week:  17 presentations to staffers, the majority of whom were asking questions about how better to treat someone addicted to heroin/fenti…note; every staffer knew someone who is now dead from an OD.

Politics:  the MORE Act was introduced this week…it would de-schedule marijuana (making it a 10th Amendment controlled issue) and sadly, contains lots of paragraphs instructing all 50 states how to handle the legacy of MJ prohibition.  This language despite the knowledge that those paragraphs guarantee minimal Republican support and any chance of it become law. Democrats know this and IMHO do not want the federal prohibition to end any time soon.  So Sad!!

4057 Presentations to Congressional staffers… 17 this week…

365 personal chats with a Member of Congress… 02 this week : Dan Bishop (R-NC) & Pramila Jayapal (D-WA)

Meetings: 02 Grover Norquist   & Tele-Conference for Conservatives regarding the Dobbs Decision
